Copenhagen to Malmö: Do You Need a Passport?

Do you need a passport from Copenhagen to Malmö? Sweden's border checks, the ID check at Hyllie, the bridge by car, tour rules and the way back (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

Yes: carry a passport, or a national ID card if you are an EU or EEA citizen, for a day in Sweden from Copenhagen. Sweden has border controls in force on arrivals by train and car from other EU and EEA countries, under a decision running from 12 May to 11 November 2026 that may be extended, and the Swedish Police check for a valid ID or travel document as you arrive in Sweden. On the train the check usually takes place at Hyllie, the first station in Sweden, according to Øresundståg. Visit Copenhagen’s page still names Copenhagen Airport station, but Øresundståg says the fixed passport check there ended on 12 May 2023.

What the day tours require

The tours set their own rule, and it is stricter than “ID”:

  • The 2-country tour asks every traveller to bring a passport and warns that a traveller who forgets it gets back to Copenhagen at their own expense. Its full list is on the tour page.
  • The Øresund Bridge tour to Lund and Malmö asks for a passport or an EU ID card.

The ask is the same either way: the passport goes in the bag the night before.

On the train

Sweden-bound trains from Copenhagen Central Station stop at Copenhagen Airport, run through the tunnel to Peberholm and over the Øresund Bridge, and reach Hyllie, the first station in Sweden. That is where Øresundståg says the Swedish Police usually check: passengers getting off at Hyllie on the platform, everyone else on board. Have the document in your hand before the train pulls in. DSB tells Sweden-bound rail passengers to bring ID such as a passport or driving licence, but the Swedish Police describe the check as one for a valid ID and travel document, so a non-EU visitor should carry the passport itself.

By car over the bridge

Drivers are checked at the Øresund Bridge’s toll station at Lernacken, outside Malmö. Øresundsbron says the Swedish Police check traffic heading into Sweden, and traffic heading to Denmark only in rare cases, and asks drivers to have ID such as a passport ready at the toll station. It adds that the traveller has to prove their own citizenship.

Coming back into Denmark

Denmark has run border controls towards Sweden since 12 November 2019, with regular checks of road, rail and ferry traffic from Sweden, by the Danish Police. Politi.dk shows no end date. On the train there has been no fixed passport check at Copenhagen Airport station since 12 May 2023, by Øresundståg’s account; the Danish Police check a selection of travellers on board or on the platform instead. The passport you took to Sweden is the one that brings you back.

The dates to watch

The Swedish Police page gives the current decision as 12 May to 11 November 2026 and says it may be extended. For a trip after that date, read the page again before you go; the tours’ passport rule does not depend on it.
