Kronborg Castle Tickets: Hamlet's Castle at Helsingør

Kronborg Castle, Hamlet's castle at Helsingør: tickets (DKK 150, 135 online), who gets in free, winter hours, Hamlet scenes, and the tours that go inside (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

A ticket to Kronborg, Hamlet’s castle at Helsingør, costs DKK 150 at the door and DKK 135 online for an adult, children go in free, and it covers the castle and all its current exhibitions, by kronborg.dk’s ticket page (October 2026). The castle sells its own tickets online. What a tour adds is the transport and a guide: the Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde day includes a guided visit inside Kronborg and the entry fee, from US$208 a person (checked October 2026), and its calendar is below.

Kronborg’s ticket prices

Kronborg lists these prices for a day ticket (October 2026):

TicketPrice
Adult, at the castleDKK 150
Adult, bought onlineDKK 135
ChildrenFree (add a free child ticket when you book online)
Annual passDKK 290

The day ticket gives access to the castle and all current exhibitions during opening hours. Kronborg says it is valid for a year after purchase and cannot be refunded, and that it gives 15% off at the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark next door. The castle publishes no student, senior or group rate; groups book a private tour through the castle.

Buying at the gate

Kronborg’s ticket office is in the yellow house after the first moat, and at the red gate after the last moat you can also buy an admission ticket with a payment card. A day ticket bought at the castle’s ticket office can be upgraded to the annual pass at the castle within 24 hours. Tickets bought online or from other sellers cannot be upgraded, and no ticket can be upgraded online, so if a second visit within the year is likely, buy at the castle.

Is there free entry to Kronborg?

For children, yes: they go in free. For adults, there are no free days. Two passes cover it: the Copenhagen Card Discover lists Kronborg among its included attractions, and it also covers the train to Helsingør; and Kronborg’s own annual pass (DKK 290) lets a friend in free on four “friend days” a year. The grounds and ramparts outside the castle are where the 2-country day to Sweden stops, and that stop needs no castle ticket.

What the ticket covers

  • The royal rooms and the chapel. Christian IV rebuilt the interior after the fire of 1629; UNESCO notes that the chapel was the only part the fire spared, with its original altar, gallery and pews.
  • The casemates. The dark passages under the castle, where the statue of Holger Danske sits. Kronborg suggests a torch, and bats hibernate there in winter.
  • The Cannon Tower. 145 steps up, for the view over the Sound and southern Sweden.

Kronborg warns that the castle has many stairs and no elevator; accessible parking is inside the grounds, to the left of the red gate.

Hamlet at Kronborg

Shakespeare set Hamlet at Elsinore, the English name for Helsingør, and the first performance of the play at the castle was in 1816. The story is older than the play. Kronborg says Shakespeare is believed to have drawn on a Scandinavian legend of Prince Amleth, who avenges his father’s murder, recorded by the Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus in the 12th century: as in Hamlet, Amleth’s father, the king, is killed by his own brother, who then marries the queen, and Amleth pretends to have gone mad.

Hamlet Highlights, short scenes played by actors around the castle and included in the ticket, is a summer event and is over for 2026: Kronborg’s page, checked in October 2026, gives the 2026 run as 26 June to 29 September, on weekends only in September, with performances between 11:00 and 16:00.

“In Hamlet’s Footsteps” is Kronborg’s 45-minute guided tour in English, running from 30 April to 30 December 2026: at 13:00 in October, at 12:30 in November and December, and at 10:30 from 26 to 30 December. It meets by the blackboard in the courtyard, and the tour ticket has to be collected at the castle shop at least 5 minutes before the start. The shorter sessions at 10:30, 12:30, 13:30, 15:30 and 16:30 are “Kronborg in 15 minutes”, a free daily introduction to the castle’s main events and people.

Getting there on your own

Trains on the coast line run from Copenhagen Central Station to Helsingør about every 20 minutes and take about 45 minutes (Kronborg gives 46; Visit Copenhagen says 40), and the castle is about a 10-minute walk from the station along the harbour. A day ticket online and the train make the cheapest visit. To go on to Sweden from there, the ferry leaves from beside the station: the Helsingør-Helsingborg ferry has the fares.

Illustration. Frederik II built Kronborg between 1574 and 1585 on the site of Krogen, a castle from the 1420s.

A short history

Eric of Pomerania built the first castle on the point, Krogen, in the 1420s, and from the 15th century until 1857 the Sound Dues, the toll on ships passing through the Øresund, were collected here. Frederik II rebuilt it as Kronborg between 1574 and 1585; it burned in 1629 and Christian IV restored it. In 1658 the Swedish king Charles X Gustav occupied and plundered it, and it came back to Denmark in 1660. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 2000. Kronborg is part of the National Museum of Denmark.
