Lund from Copenhagen: the Cathedral and the Old Town

A Lund day trip from Copenhagen: the 1145 cathedral and its astronomical clock (play times), the university town, Kulturen, the train, and the tours that stop in Lund (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

Lund is the older half of a Sweden day from Copenhagen: a university town whose cathedral was consecrated in 1145, with an astronomical clock that plays at 12:00 and 15:00 from Monday to Saturday and at 13:00 and 15:00 on Sundays. By train it is about 35 minutes from Copenhagen Airport, by Lund University’s figure, and 10 to 15 minutes from Malmö. The tour that gives Lund the most time is the Øresund Bridge tour to Lund and Malmö, about an hour and a half in Lund, from US$120 a person (checked October 2026); its calendar is below.

Lund Cathedral

  • Its age. The altar in the crypt was consecrated on 30 June 1123 and the whole cathedral on 1 September 1145, by Archbishop Eskil; Lund had been an archbishopric since 1103, by the cathedral’s own history.
  • The astronomical clock. The Horologium mirabile Lundense was first set going around 1425, probably by Nicolaus Lilenfeld of Rostock, and restored in 1923; its calendar runs from 1923 to 2123. It plays from Monday to Saturday at 12:00 and 15:00, and on Sundays at 13:00 and 15:00, with a short guided viewing at 11:45 from Monday to Saturday.
  • Hours. Monday to Friday 08:00 to 18:00, Saturday 09:30 to 17:00, Sunday 09:30 to 18:00, with changes for services and concerts.
  • Entry. The cathedral lists no entry fee, and its guided visits for individual visitors are free.

The clock is the reason to plan the hour. A tour that reaches Lund at 11:30 sees the clock play; one that leaves at 11:55 does not.

The town around it

Lund University was founded on 19 December 1666 and inaugurated in the cathedral on 28 January 1668, so the university and the cathedral share a history. Behind the cathedral, the small streets of old houses are what the tours walk. Kulturen, the museum a few minutes’ walk east of the cathedral (measured on the map), charges SEK 150 for an adult and is free up to age 18; from September to April it is closed on Mondays and open 10:00 to 16:00 on other days, to 20:00 on Thursdays (October 2026).

Getting there on your own

Trains from Copenhagen run over the Øresund Bridge through Copenhagen Airport and Malmö to Lund. Lund University gives about 35 minutes from the airport and 10 to 15 minutes from Malmö. Carry a passport or ID: DSB says Sweden runs border checks on entry (passports from Copenhagen to Malmö). Lund and Malmö fit one day together, so the Malmö day trip is the other half.
