Malmö Day Trip from Copenhagen

A Malmö day trip from Copenhagen: the train over the Øresund Bridge (DKK 96, about 35 min), what to see, and the tours that add a guide, Lund or Kronborg, in US$ (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

A Malmö day trip from Copenhagen takes almost no planning: trains leave Copenhagen Central Station every 20 minutes and reach central Malmö in about 35 minutes over the Øresund Bridge, and DSB lists an adult single at DKK 96 (October 2026). If Malmö is all you want, the train is the answer. If you want Malmö as part of a bigger day, with Kronborg, the ferry and Lund, the 2-country tour is from US$138 a person (checked October 2026), and its calendar is below.

The train runs from Copenhagen Central Station through the airport, by tunnel to Peberholm and over the Øresund Bridge; the Swedish ID check usually comes at Hyllie, before Malmö Central Station.

The train on your own

  • Frequency and time. Every 20 minutes from Copenhagen Central Station, about 35 minutes to central Malmö (Visit Copenhagen’s figure; the same board quotes 25 to 38 minutes on other pages, so allow 40).
  • Fare. DSB sells the Øresund ticket, an adult single in second class from Copenhagen or Kastrup to Malmö, at DKK 96, from its machines, its sales offices and 7-Eleven. Two children under 7 travel free with an adult; ages 7 to 15 need a child ticket.
  • Passport. DSB says Sweden runs continuous border checks on entry and asks travellers to carry ID such as a passport. The Swedish Police usually check on arrival at Hyllie, the first station in Sweden, according to Øresundståg; Visit Copenhagen’s page still names Copenhagen Airport station, where the fixed check ended on 12 May 2023. Passports from Copenhagen to Malmö has the detail.
  • Money. Sweden uses the krona (SEK), not the Danish krone. The Riksbank’s 2026 payments report puts cards at about 92% of in-store payments, and one company in three surveyed does not take cash, so a card is the plan.

What to see in a day

Malmö’s old town is compact, and the walking tours trace the same loop:

  • Stortorget and Lilla Torg. The big square and the small one sit side by side. Lilla Torg was laid out as a market square in the 1590s, by the city’s own account, and is lined with cafés.
  • St Petri. The brick church behind Stortorget was built in the early 1300s, by the parish’s own history at Svenska kyrkan.
  • Malmöhus castle and its parks. Malmö Museer’s day ticket for the castle is SEK 60 for an adult and free up to age 19, and covers the castle exhibitions, the aquarium and the art museum. Some exhibitions are closed until about March 2027 while a lift is replaced, so check what is open before you pay.
  • The Turning Torso. Santiago Calatrava’s twisting tower in the Western Harbour is 190 metres tall, with 54 floors, and its residents moved in in November 2005. It is a residential building, so you see it from outside.
  • Ribersborgs Kallbadhus. The open-air bathhouse on its pier, open all year, SEK 90 for an adult; the beach beside it looks out at the Øresund Bridge.

With the free hours

The 2-country tour leaves you free time in Malmö, and a day on the train is all free time. Four ways to spend an hour:

  • The Western Harbour boardwalk. Sundspromenaden in Västra Hamnen, the Turning Torso’s district, is a wooden deck with wide concrete steps down to jetties at water level, where people swim in summer; the City of Malmö warns that the water is deep.
  • Kungsparken. Malmö’s oldest park, opened to the public in 1872 on the castle’s old fortification ground beside Malmöhus, with a cast-iron fountain from 1882 and many exotic trees, by the City of Malmö’s account.
  • A fika. Coffee and a pastry, the Swedish break, in one of the cafés around Lilla Torg.
  • Something odd. The Disgusting Food Museum ticket covers the smell jars, the photo booth and a tasting bar with surströmming and fermented shark, in a visit of about an hour and a half, from US$23 a person (checked October 2026).

Malmö with Lund

Lund is 10 to 15 minutes from Malmö by local train, so the two fit one day on your own as well as on a tour. Lund’s cathedral, consecrated in 1145, has an astronomical clock that plays at 12:00 and 15:00 from Monday to Saturday. Lund from Copenhagen covers the town; the day trips compared sets every option side by side.
